Why We Still Believe in Independent Boutiques
Share
When people ask us what makes Modo different, we usually don't start by talking about brands.
We talk about the experience.
Walking into an independent boutique is different from shopping almost anywhere else. The racks change every day. The inventory isn't chosen by a corporate buyer hundreds of miles away. Every piece has been selected because someone thought it was worth giving a second life.
That's one of the reasons we've loved doing this for nearly 20 years.
Every visit is different
One of the things we hear all the time is:
"I always find something different when I come in."
That's exactly how we hope it feels.
New consignments arrive almost every day. One week we might have a beautiful Marimekko dress, the next week a vintage Pendleton jacket, a perfectly worn-in pair of AGOLDE jeans, or a leather Clare V. bag.
Because everything is one of a kind, every visit is a little treasure hunt.
We get to know what our customers love
One of the best parts of being a small boutique is getting to know the people who shop here.
We remember the customer who always checks the jewelry case first. The one who loves linen. The person searching for the perfect everyday boot. The regular who lights up every time a Rachel Comey piece comes through the door.
Those conversations are one of our favorite parts of the job.
Shopping starts to feel less like running errands and more like catching up with people who share a love of good style.
Good clothing deserves another life
Every piece in our shop belonged to someone before.
It might have been worn to work, packed for a favorite vacation, saved for special occasions, or simply loved for years.
When someone consigns it, they're making room in their closet—but they're also giving someone else the chance to discover it.
We love being part of that exchange.
It's one of the reasons consignment feels so personal.
Shopping small has a ripple effect
When you shop at Modo, you're supporting more than one business.
You're supporting a local boutique.
You're supporting the person who consigned that piece.
You're helping keep beautiful clothing in circulation instead of sending it to a landfill.
And you're helping keep Alberta Street full of independent businesses that make this neighborhood such a special place to spend an afternoon.
We still believe slower is better
Fashion moves quickly.
We don't think your closet has to.
Some of the best pieces are the ones you wear for years. The jacket that somehow works with everything. The sweater you reach for every week. The bag that only gets better with age.
Those aren't impulse purchases.
They're the pieces that become part of your life.
Why we still love what we do
After nearly 20 years, we still get excited when someone finds the piece they didn't know they were looking for.
The jacket that fits perfectly.
The dress they immediately want to wear out of the store.
The handbag they've been searching for for months.
Those moments never get old.
They're the reason we open the doors every morning.
Thank you for supporting independent boutiques, shopping secondhand, and helping great pieces find new homes.
We hope we'll get to help you find your next favorite piece soon.
