What to Bring In Now: Early Fall Consignment at Modo

Late August is a good time to start looking at your closet a little differently.

It may still feel like summer outside, but fall pieces start moving before the weather fully changes. That’s especially true with consignment, where the best denim, jackets, boots, bags, and sweaters tend to come in one at a time.

If you’ve been meaning to clean out your closet, this is a great time to bring in the pieces that feel ready for their next chapter.

Here’s what we’re especially looking for at Modo as we head into early fall.

Denim

Good denim is always a yes.

Jeans, denim jackets, denim skirts, overalls, wide-leg styles, straight-leg cuts, vintage-inspired washes, and quality everyday denim all tend to do well this time of year.

Before bringing denim in, check for worn inner thighs, broken zippers, stretched-out waistbands, stains, or heavy wear. A little softness and character is great. Tired and falling apart is harder for us to sell.

Light jackets

This is the season for jackets that make sense before it’s truly cold.

Think denim jackets, chore coats, utility jackets, blazers, leather jackets, trenches, lightweight wool layers, and easy transitional outerwear.

Portland shoppers love pieces that layer well and still feel practical. A good jacket can make a simple outfit feel pulled together without trying too hard.

Boots and walkable shoes

Boot season starts earlier than people think.

We’re looking for clean, wearable boots, ankle boots, Chelsea boots, loafers, clogs, sneakers, and shoes that feel right for real life.

Shoes should be in very good condition, with clean interiors, solid soles, and plenty of life left. If the soles are heavily worn or the leather is cracked, they may be better for donation or repair.

Sweaters and knits

Early fall is the time for lighter sweaters and easy layers.

Cotton knits, thin wool sweaters, cardigans, textured pullovers, striped sweaters, and soft everyday knits are all great to bring in now.

Heavier winter pieces can wait a little longer, but if you have special sweaters in great condition, we’re happy to take a look.

Bags

A good bag can sell quickly when it’s clean, useful, and still has structure.

Leather totes, crossbodies, shoulder bags, slouchy bags, vintage bags, and everyday designer bags are all great for fall. Check the straps, corners, lining, hardware, zippers, and inside pockets before bringing them in.

Bags don’t have to be perfect, but they should feel clean and ready to use.

Dresses and prints that layer well

We’re not done with dresses just because summer is winding down.

The best late-summer dresses are the ones that can move into fall with boots, a jacket, or a sweater. Florals, darker prints, easy midi dresses, shirt dresses, and pieces with richer colors can all work well right now.

If it still feels too beachy or very summer-specific, it may be better to save for next spring.

Pieces with texture, color, or shape

Fall style doesn’t have to mean plain.

We love pieces with texture, interesting fabric, good color, a strong shape, or a little personality. Corduroy, suede, leather, wool, denim, silk, cotton, and textured knits all feel especially good this time of year.

Modo has always been about style that feels collected, not copied. Pieces with a little something extra are often the ones people get excited to find.

What to hold for later

A few things may be better to save for another season.

Very summery linen, shorts, sandals, beachy dresses, and lightweight vacation pieces may not move as well once people are thinking about fall.

On the other side, very heavy winter coats, holiday pieces, and thick cold-weather items may do better a little later.

When in doubt, bring us the pieces that feel useful for right now and the next couple of months.

A simple check before you bring things in

Before you pack your bag, take a minute to look everything over in good light.

Ask yourself:

Would someone be excited to find this at Modo today?
Is it clean and in great condition?
Does it still feel current, classic, or interesting?
Does it have enough life left for someone else to love it?

If yes, it may be a great fit.

Late summer is one of the best times to reset your closet, let go of what you’re not wearing, and make room for what’s next.
