What Makes a Piece Worth Consigning?

Cleaning out your closet feels great.

But once you have the pile, the next question is usually: what should I actually bring in to consign?

At Modo, we look for pieces that still feel fresh, wearable, and exciting for someone else to find. That doesn’t mean everything has to be designer or brand new. Some of our favorite pieces are small or independent labels, interesting prints, quality denim, beautiful jackets, and pieces with just enough personality.

The goal is simple: would someone be happy to discover this on the rack today?

One thing people are often surprised to hear is that we don't just look at the label. A beautiful linen dress from a smaller designer will often be a better fit for our shop than an outdated luxury piece. Style, condition, and season matter just as much as the brand.

Here are a few things we look for when deciding what makes a piece worth consigning.

It’s in great condition

This is the biggest one.

Before you bring something in, give it a quick once-over in good light. Look for stains, holes, pilling, missing buttons, broken zippers, stretched-out elastic, worn soles, or anything that might make the piece feel tired.

A piece doesn’t need to be perfect, but it should feel clean, cared for, and ready for its next person.

If you wouldn’t feel good handing it to a friend, it probably isn’t quite right for consignment.

It still feels current

Consignment is different from donating.

We’re looking for pieces that someone would be excited to buy and wear now. That can mean current brands, modern shapes, classic staples, or vintage pieces that still feel relevant.

A good test: can you imagine someone styling it with what they already wear today?

A great blazer, a well-cut jean, a good boot, a beautiful dress, a quality sweater, an interesting bag — those pieces tend to have staying power.

The fabric and feel matter

People can tell when something feels good.

Natural fibers, good denim, soft knits, leather, silk, linen, cotton, wool, and pieces with nice texture usually stand out. So do items that hold their shape and feel good in your hands.

That doesn’t mean every piece has to be insanely expensive. It just means quality matters.

Sometimes the fabric is what makes someone stop, pull it from the rack, and try it on.

It has a point of view

We love pieces that bring something to an outfit.

A great color. A cool print. A strong shape. A beautiful button. A jacket that makes jeans feel intentional. A bag that makes a simple outfit feel finished.

At Modo, we like closets that feel collected, not copied. So we’re always drawn to pieces with a little personality, especially when they still feel wearable.

It fits the season

Season matters.

Light dresses, sandals, linen, cotton, and easy layers make more sense when the weather is warming up. Coats, boots, sweaters, wool, and heavier denim make more sense when we’re heading into fall and winter.

Bringing things in season helps them sell better because they match what people are actually shopping for right now.

Shoes and bags should feel especially clean

Shoes and bags can be amazing consignment pieces, but condition matters a lot.

For shoes, check the soles, heels, toes, and inside. For bags, look at the corners, straps, lining, hardware, and overall structure.

A great leather bag, a cool boot, a clean sneaker, or a special occasion shoe can do really well when it still has plenty of life left.

Don’t overthink every piece

Closet cleanouts can get weirdly emotional.

Maybe something was expensive. Maybe you loved it once. Maybe it still has tags. Maybe it fits a version of your life that you don’t really dress for anymore.

That’s okay.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is let a piece move on and become someone else’s favorite find.

A simple question to ask yourself

Before bringing something in, ask:

Would I be excited to find this in a shop today?

If the answer is yes, it may be a great fit for Modo.

If the answer is “not really,” it might be better for donation, repair, textile recycling, or passing along to a friend.

Consignment works best when the pieces feel ready for their next chapter. Clean, current, wearable, and still full of possibility.

That’s what makes the treasure hunt fun for everyone.
