5 Easy Outfit Formulas for Late Summer in Portland

Late summer in Portland is its own little season.

It’s still warm. It’s not really fall. You might leave the house in a tee and wish you had a jacket by dinner. Or bring the jacket and carry it around all afternoon.

This is where easy layers start to matter again.

At Modo, we love this time of year for secondhand shopping because you can still wear your summer favorites, but the denim, jackets, boots, bags, and light sweaters start feeling useful again.

Here are a few simple outfit formulas we always come back to for late summer.

1. Dress + boots + light jacket

This is one of the easiest ways to keep wearing your favorite dresses as the season starts to shift.

A printed dress, simple boots, and a denim jacket, blazer, chore coat, or lightweight leather jacket can take something that felt very summer and make it feel ready for late August.

It also works well for Portland because it’s easy without looking too done.

2. Good denim + tee + interesting bag

Sometimes the simplest outfit is the best one.

A great pair of jeans, a tee or tank, and a bag with a little personality can be enough. The key is choosing pieces that have good shape, texture, or color.

Secondhand is especially good for this because you can find denim that already feels broken in and bags that don’t look like everyone else’s.

3. Skirt + sweater + sneakers or clogs

A skirt with a light sweater is perfect for the in-between season.

It feels a little softer than jeans, but still easy for everyday life. Add sneakers, clogs, loafers, or boots depending on the weather and where you’re headed.

This is also a good way to keep wearing a summer skirt without making it feel too summery.

4. Button-down + relaxed pants + sandals

A button-down is one of those pieces that works almost all year.

Wear it open over a tank, tucked into relaxed pants, tied at the waist, or layered under a jacket later. In late summer, it gives you just enough coverage without feeling heavy.

Look for cotton, linen, silk, stripes, prints, or an oversized shape that feels easy.

5. Simple outfit + one piece with personality

This might be our favorite formula.

Start with something simple: denim and a tee, a black dress, trousers and a tank, a sweater and jeans.

Then add one piece that makes the outfit feel like you.

A vintage jacket. A printed blouse. A great belt. A leather bag. A pair of boots. A color you love. A piece that feels a little unexpected.

That one thing is usually what makes an outfit feel collected, not copied.

Shop for what you’ll actually wear

Late summer is a good time to notice what you’re reaching for and what you’re ready to leave behind.

You don’t need a whole new wardrobe for the next season. You might just need one good jacket, one better pair of denim, a bag you actually use, or a piece that helps your closet feel fresh again.

That’s why we love consignment.

You can shop slowly, try things on, and find pieces that work with what you already own.
