10 Questions We Get Asked Every Day About Consignment
If you've never consigned clothing before, you're not alone.
Every day at Modo, we answer questions from people who are cleaning out their closets for the first time, wondering how the process works, or simply trying to decide if consignment is the right fit.
Here are ten of the questions we hear most often.
1. Do I need an appointment?
No! We accept consignment drop-offs every day from 11am–6pm, and no appointment is necessary.
If you have a particularly large collection or you're coming from out of town, it never hurts to reach out ahead of time, but for most drop-offs, you're welcome to stop by during store hours.
2. What kinds of clothing are you looking for?
We're always looking for current, well-made clothing, shoes, handbags, and accessories that are clean, in excellent condition, and seasonally appropriate.
We especially love natural fabrics, great denim, interesting jackets, everyday dresses, quality handbags, and pieces with personality.
If you're unsure whether something is a fit, bring it in! We'd much rather take a look than have you guess.
3. Does it have to be designer?
Not at all.
Of course we love designer labels, but beautiful style matters just as much as the brand name.
Some of our favorite consignments come from independent designers, contemporary brands, and smaller labels that are simply well made and fun to wear.
4. How do you decide what to accept?
We look at the whole picture.
Condition.
Style.
Season.
Fabric.
Current demand.
Whether we think someone will be excited to discover it on the rack.
A beautiful linen shirt may be a better fit than an outdated luxury piece.
5. What happens after I drop everything off?
Our team carefully reviews your items, prices accepted pieces, photographs them when appropriate, and prepares them for the sales floor or our online shop.
We work hard to make sure every piece has the best chance of finding its next home.
6. How long do items stay in the shop?
Most consignments stay with us for around 120 days, giving customers plenty of time to discover them through different seasons and markdowns.
If something doesn't sell, we'll reach out so you can choose whether you'd like to pick it up or donate it.
7. When do I get paid?
Once an item sells and the return period has passed, you're welcome to request your payout.
Many consignors choose PayPal, Venmo, or a check, while others use store credit and enjoy the extra bonus that comes with it.
8. What if something doesn't sell?
Not everything finds the right person—and that's okay.
At the end of your consignment period, you can choose to pick up your remaining items or have them donated to one of our local nonprofit partners.
9. Can I bring shoes and handbags?
Absolutely.
Great shoes, leather bags, jewelry, scarves, and accessories often become some of the most exciting finds in the shop.
Condition is especially important, so it's always worth giving them a quick clean before bringing them in.
10. What's your biggest piece of advice?
Bring the pieces you genuinely loved wearing.
The jacket that always got compliments.
The dress you reached for every summer.
The bag that went with everything.
Those are often exactly the pieces someone else has been hoping to find.
Still have questions?
Every closet is a little different, and every consignment collection is unique.
If you're ever unsure about what to bring, stop by or get in touch. We're always happy to answer questions and help you decide what might be a good fit.
One of our favorite parts of consignment is helping great pieces find their next chapter.
